How is your granola produced?
Our granola is hand made, produced in limited quantities, and carefully monitored during the mixing, baking and packaging process. Eric and Chris Breeze of The House of Bread have been most gracious for letting Sierra Crunch produce the granola there.
Does your granola contain nuts?
The granola contains almonds. The products may have come in contact with other nuts at the food suppliers from whom we purchase our ingredients.
Why do you use agave syrup rather than honey?
Agave syrup is lower in the glycemic index then other sweeteners and has a sweeter, lighter taste then honey. The syrup naturally contains iron, calcium, potassium & magnesium. Agave nectar that we use is sustainably harvested by the Hnahnu Indians on land they own in the high desert region of Central Mexico.
Why do you use cacao powder?
Cacao sounds like "ka cow" when pronounced. It is rich in flavor and a source of protein, carbohydrate, iron, zinc. copper, calcium, potassium, antioxidants and magnesium. The unprocessed cacao contains anandamide, which has a postive affect on mood. The cacao we use is from the native-born heirloom Ecuadorian species named Arriba Nacional-Fino de Aroma. This variety of of cacao is considered to have the finest floral aroma and flavor, and the highest amount of nutrients and minerals.
What are goji berries?
Goji berries come from China, Mongolia and the Himalayan region of Tibet. They have been used in Tibetan medicine for over 1,700 years. Used in treatment of kidney and liver ailments, they have also been reported to be active in fighting several kinds of leukemia. Goji Berries contain 18 amino acids, 21 minerals including zinc, copper, calcium, and potassium, more beta carotene than carrots and more iron than spinach per serving. They are a great source of Vitamins B1, B2, B6, C, and E. Goji Berries are rated #1 on the ORAC scale by the USDA. That means they have the highest oxygen radical absorbance capacity. Goji berrries when dried are about the size of raisins, are dark red in color and slightly oblong in shape. They have a mildly sweet taste.
Do you use locally grown ingredients?
The majority of ingredients in our granola are not items that are grown in this region or readily available in bulk quantities directly from small farms. Our almonds are purchased directly from Robert and Darlene Boggeri from Boggeri Farms in Hughson, California.
